  • The thick of it, doubling double knit

Have you tried doubling your yarn to create a yarn palette?

Here, I started making a blanket using a corner to corner stitch. At the moment, using 2 colorways of yarn can make up to three color palette.

    • orange, white
    • white
    • orange

I am using a #marrineryarn double knit. This yarn is suitable for 4mm crochet hook. But since I have doubled it, my 6.5mm Tulip crochet hook fit perfectly with the yarn thickness I have created. I t is definitely thicker than a typical Aran yarn.

  • The Double Crochet Filet Pattern that follows the Rule of 6.

Have you ever seen a crochet pattern that follows a rule of 6? As I am following this pattern also called “Which Way Up Filet Pattern” , it is kind of confusing where to put the filet stitch is. I have come up with a solution and it turned out that there are 6 rules to follow to achieve this pattern. I promise you wouldn’t need the pattern instructions all the time once it is in your muscle memory.

If you would like the pattern, I have it in my pattern collection. This pattern is called Which Way Up Filet Pattern. And to let you know, this is NOT my original design, just one of the people who enjoy making this pattern.

Which Way Up Filet Pattern Rule of 6

    Rule No. 1

    • Each corner space must have 2 double crochet, 2 chains, and another 2 double crochet consecutively.

This rule is a non-negotiable rule. It must be followed, otherwise you won’t have a square in your pattern.

This rule begins at round 1

    Rule No. 2

    • Each group of 6 double crochet must have 2 chains in each side.

This rule begins at round 2. Using the corner double crochet stitches, you can work up to 6 double crochet on each side of the square.

Round 2 will dictate how the next round align itself so it can perform the next rules.

    Rule No. 3

    • The top of the first 2 double crochet must not have stitches

This rule begins at round 3, where you will use the group of 6 double crochet from previous round as your point of reference.

How are you going to do that? Of course you need to maintain your stitch counts to keep your square square, so the solution here is to compensate with 2 chains

    Rule No. 4

    • The first stitch of the next group of 6 double crochet must start on the third stitch of the group of 6 from previous round.

This rule begins at round 3, immediately after Rule no. 3.

By remembering this rule, you can continue on crocheting your next 6 double crochet stitches.

    Rule No. 5

    • The last 2 stitches of the group of 6 double crochet always block the gap from previous round.

This rule actually begins at Round 3 but the Rule No. 1 is achieving this on this round. But it will be more visible from Round 4.

    Rule No. 6

    • The gaps created throughout the rounds must be directly parallel to the gaps created by the left corner stitches

This rule happened at the very beginning at Round 1 but it becomes more visible from Round 4

And there you have. You will notice that this pattern won’t happen without each rule being followed.

Here is new yarn palette inspiration I called Fishers of Men, inspired by the color of the sea and the sky with an accent of yellow representing the sun rays. The pattern also shows the crochet posts look like fish bones.

Why Fishers of Men? It is a phrase Jesus has promised to become when he invited the two fishermen Peter and Andrew to be his disciples.

Rusted Terracotta is inspired by a village where I was born making pots using clay. After setting it in high temperature, the kiln turns this gray clay into a sunny orange terracotta.

  • Working on connecting multiple color variations of the Floral Granny Square

It is such a beauty to be able to crochet the Floral Granny Square in multiple variations of yarn color. If you are interested to get this pattern it is available on my blog free online.

    • Floral Granny Square

I am use to connecting squares as I go along, I think it looks more professional doing so. The top tips I can share with you is that

    • Take the hook off your current loop, insert hook where you wanted to connect, then grab the loop back to your hook and continue with your next stitch. I find this method more effective and looks seamlessly connected with the other square.
    • You can actually try the other way round so you can see the difference, perhaps in different scenario this method will work just fine. While the loop is on your hook as normal, you insert the hook into the space of the other square, and grab and make your next stitch from there.

But either way, it will work just fine.

  • Making the Tinee Granny Square

    Step by Step Instructions

Crochet Stitches Standard: I am using the US/ International Standards

    You will need the following:

    • wool/ yarn suitable for 4mm hook
    • 4mm crochet hook
    • scissors
    • darning needle (optional)

    Let’s get started

Tension is very important, the yarn must be able to glide smoothly from your tension hand to the working hand, not too tight not too lose and follow the gauge of your hook.

    Cluster Stitch:

    • yarn over, insert hook into specified space and pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops.
    • yarn over twice, insert hook into the same specified space and pull up a loop, (yarn over, pull through 2 loops) twice.
    • yarn over, insert hook into the same specified space and pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops., yarn over and pull through all loops.

First, we start off with a slipknot

    Foundation Ring:

For the foundation ring, I will count the slip knot as chain 1. This will avoid a bump around the ring.

Chain 5, this includes the slip knot. Slip stitch on the slip knot. You can also use the alternative open loop ring (also known as magic ring), this will work as well

    Round 1: Wrong Side

    • chain 1.
    • ( single crochet. treble crochet ) into the ring 8 times.
    • slip stitch into the first single crochet of this round.

Round Check: For this round, you should have 8 single crochets and 8 treble crochets, a total of 16 stitches.

I would say that this round would be the most tricky one as you really need to fit in those 16 stitches in a 5 chain ring. The positive side is that it pushes out the treble stitches which create that bumpy floral petals.

    Round 2:

    • chain 1. turn.
    • single crochet on the same stitch
    • chain 3.
    • skip the next treble crochet, single crochet into the next single crochet.
    • repeat the anchors 6 more times.
    • chain 1. secure this round with a double crochet on the first single crochet of this round, this will serve as your last chain 3, as well as leaving you at the center of the last stitch space ready for the next round.

Round Check: For this round, 8 chain spaces (including the alternative double crochet)

    Round 3:

    • chain 2.
    • work cluster stitch into the same space.
    • chain 3.
    • single crochet, chain 3, single crochet into the next chain space.
    • chain 3.
    • work cluster stitch into the next chain space. chain 3. work cluster stitch into the same chain space. chain 1. this serves as a square corner.
    • Repeat the anchors and star items 2 more times.
    • Repeat just the anchors 1 more time.
    • work cluster stitch into the next space.
    • chain 1. secure this round with a double crochet on the first single crochet.

Round Check: Each corner should have cluster stitch, chain 3, and another cluster stitch. There should be 3 (chain 3) spaces on each side.

    Round 4:

    • chain 1. single crochet into the same space.
    • chain 3. single crochet into the next chain space.
    • single crochet, chain 3, single crochet into the next chain space.
    • single crochet into the next chain space. chain 3.
    • (single crochet, chain 3, single crochet) into the next chain space. (this is a square corner).
    • Repeat the anchors and star items 2 more times.
    • Repeat just the anchors 1 more time.
    • single crochet into the last corner space, chain 3, .and secure with a slip stitch into the first single crochet for this round.

Round Check: You should have 16 chain spaces for this round.

And there you have it, the Tinee Granny Square. Connect them together using whichever method you prefer
